Two basic school students (names withheld) at Berekuso in the Eastern Region have been identified with unusual discharges from their breasts during a breast screening exercise in the area.
The exercise which was organized by Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) for community members and schools saw about four people battling suspected breast cancer signs.
The other two victims are 62-year-old Osaebia Esther and Quratey Francisca, 24.
One of the affected students, a 13-year-old girl, said she realized the strange change in her breast a year ago but could not confide in her guardian.
“It started as rashes on my breast and then after a while, there was a discharge,” she said.
The victims were among 280 women MBCF screened as part of its year-round breast cancer fight.
Students of the Berekuso Senior High Technical School, Berekuso Presby Primary ‘A’ and ‘B’ schools participated in the exercise, which attracted community members.
More teenagers are falling prey to the disease, which is why MBCF is keen on sensitizing and screening students.
The Foundation has already reached out to eight educational institutions including a University.
Aside from that, many communities, corporate bodies, and religious institutions have been engaged.
So far, Ten thousand women have benefited from the MBCF’s initiative.
Since its establishment a year ago, approximately ten thousand women have been engaged, its Executive Director said.
MBCF was established on the vision of the late Mrs. Amina Oppong Kwarteng, spouse of Mr. Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation and MBCF.
She died of breast cancer in 2022.
