She is just 28, due to deliver her third child but has to suffer the agony of pains as her right breast bursts. Breast cancer has struck again.
Belinda Awuye resorted to self-treatment when she detected a painful strange lump in her breast two years ago.
According to her husband, 42-year-old James Akorli, the self-treatment was in futility pushing them to seek herbal and spiritual healing instead of medical care.
“We did not have money to visit the hospital so we went to a herbal canter and later to a prayer camp where we were told that the breast lump was cancerous.”
Mr. Akorli said six months after seeking the herbal and spiritual care her wife’s condition worsened. He said Belinda’s breast swelled again amid unbearable pains, but due to financial difficulties, the fisherman could only look on.
Amidst seeking solution for the disease, Belinda took seed of her third child.
As the pregnancy grew, the cancer aggravated. The mother of two is almost in the ninth month of her pregnancy but she would no longer be able to breastfeed as her breast is rotten.
“I took her to a clinic at Bawdjiase but medical officers told us it was beyond their capacity,” Mr. Akorli said.
The distressed couple managed to reach out to Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) for support to get proper medical attention for Belinda.
With urgency, MBCF arranged for her to start treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. All costs to be borne by the Foundation.
Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) has been sensitizing the general public on the importance of seeking early detection and treatment.
Established a year ago, MBCF undertakes communities, and institutional sensitization and breast screening outreach as part of its year-round fight against the dreaded disease.
So far, ten thousand women have been engaged, its Executive Director, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng has indicated.
The Foundation was founded with motivation from the death of Amina Oppong Kwarteng, spouse of Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng who is also the Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation (CCF).
