MBCF breast screening campaign-Women urged to refrain from drinking alcohol

Women have been urged to refrain from taking alcohol as the fight against breast cancer intensifies.

Giving the advice, a nurse with the Tema General Hospital, Dorothy Yirenkyi said alcohol makes women susceptible to contracting breast cancer among other unhealthy living habits.

She was speaking to residents of Otwekrom, a community within the Agona Swedru Municipality of the Central Region when Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) made a stop to screen women in the community.

“As women, you must stay away from drinking alcohol. Taking alcohol makes you prone to the disease because it will weaken your system,” she advised.

Otwekwa is among the many communities that have benefited from the MBCF’s breast cancer screening and education outreaches.

Mrs. Yirenkyi encouraged the women to adhere to healthy living habits and be sensitive to changes in their breasts.

“When you realize obvious changes in your breasts you should be concerned. You should seek medical advice when you see such changes. When you notice abnormal discharges or your breasts vary in size there is the need for you to see a doctor,” she entreated.

A nurse from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Rita took the women through self-breast screening.

Meena Breast Cancer Foundation has screened close to ten thousand women since its establishment a year ago.

The Foundation’s establishment was drawn from the inspiration of the late Amina Oppong Kwarteng who lost her life to breast cancer in 2022.

She was the spouse of Mr. Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng.
