Having lost one of her breasts, Maria Abubakar was totally despaired for fear of losing the second breast and eventually, her life.
The breast cancer patient who is in her 50s could not afford treatment till she contacted Meena Breast Cancer Foundation (MBCF) for assistance.
Madam Abubakar told crimecheckghana.org that her fate was doomed when doctors revealed to her the cost of Radiotherapy treatment.
“The doctors at the Korle-Bu teaching hospital gave me a bill of GHC 4,800 to be able to undergo radiotherapy treatment,” she said.
This is after she had undergone surgery to remove her left breast, which had been cancer infested.
The burden, according to her, to raise GHC 4,800 was not foreseeable as she could barely make ends meet.
“I saw a little boil beneath my left breast and it was painful. Because life is difficult for me I went for care at the Battor hospital instead of Korle-Bu which was nearer.
“Three weeks later, I was referred to Korle-Bu where I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” she narrated.
Madam Abubakar’s radiotherapy treatment starts on Monday, April 17, 2023, but she had no help in sight.
A call she placed to MBCF on Friday, April 13, 2023, saved her life.
The Foundation with urgency sourced funds for her from two of its donors, US-based Maa Julie and UK-based Adom Family.
Madam Abubakar was given GHC 2,000 to make a deposit at the hospital to enable her to begin the treatment.
